All 11 metro areas showing the highest increases in personal income earnings in 2009 were also among the top areas for military earnings. The Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV led all areas by far in total income gain during 2009 increasing by $3.5 billion. Besides the nation’s capital for the federal government, Washington DC is also the 3rd highest metro for military earnings.
Among the nation’s top 11 “military metros”, only San Diego and the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA MSA endured a decline of overall personal income in 2009. Despite San Diego’s significant increase of military earnings during the year, personal income overall declined by more than $1.5 billion or 1.1 percent decrease.
