Based on the most recent data from the California Employment Development Department (EDD) quarterly census of employment and wages (Q4 2010), there were almost 6,150 tech companies in San Diego employing almost 140,000 employees and more than $3.5 billion total payroll for the quarter. National University Systems Institute for Policy Research estimated the total number of establishments for all industries in San Diego was more than 100,400. These companies are estimated to have employed more than 1.26 million workers as of the second quarter of 2011 and represent a total payroll of more than $17.5 billion in payroll for the quarter.
