The freeze could cost the region annually more than $108 million in lost wages, said Kelly Cunningham, an economist with the National University System Institute for Policy Research in La Jolla.
In turn, the freeze is expected to cause the local economy to lose $190.3 million, he said.
San Diego County ranks No. 10 in civilian federal employees, totalling 37,250 affected by the freeze. This excludes an additional 6,150 who are postal workers, who wouldn't be affected. The Washington, D.C., metropolitan area tops the civilian list with 318,250 employees.
