In San Diego, the effect of pending cuts could be painful because U.S. government spending represents about a fifth of the region’s economic activity, according to a May report by the National University System Institute of Policy Research.
San Diego received $36 billion dollars in 2009 in federal spending, 42 percent of it related to the region’s military presence and 33 percent tied to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, the report said.
