"We have been adding jobs over the past few years in manufacturing, adding maybe 1,000 jobs a year," said Kelly Cunningham, a senior fellow and economist with the National University System Institute for Policy Research.

...Historically, aerospace dominated San Diego's manufacturing industry, with more than half of all civilians working in the field during World War II. Today, aerospace represents less than 1 percent of the work force. But, it still accounts for the majority of manufacturing jobs. Companies such as General Atomics and Northrop Grumman make drones and other defense-related products, Cunningham said.
