Kelly Cunningham, economist at the institute, said the recession exacerbated changes that have been happening in San Diego since the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, when San Diego lost many of its manufacturing jobs.
During the recession, he said, it lost large numbers of construction, sales, office and middle-management positions that have not come back.
"San Diego’s employment landscape thus becomes ever more hourglass shaped with higher-wage jobs accumulating on one end, low-wage jobs maintaining relative proportions, and middle-wage jobs clearly losing the most," he said.
