"We wanted to determine how many of those folks are from out of town, how many of them stay at hotels, how many of them spend money (in San Diego) and how long do they stay. And once you begin crunching those numbers, you can really get a better understanding that this is something that's economically significant to the San Diego region," said analyst Vince Vasquez of the National University Institute.

Vasquez is also a marathoner, who wondered how much money San Diego makes from people like him.

"We even wanted to make a comparison to Comic-Con. And you can see the number of people that were estimated to come this year, about 130,000. And if you look to see how many people participated in endurance events in 2013, it's over 134,000."
