Cities getting disappointed by all-star events is nothing new, said Erik Bruvold, president of the National University System Institute for Policy Research. He said multiple studies have shown they rarely have the projected impact, whether it be baseball, basketball or other sports.
Bruvold said the city’s analysis doesn’t include evidence that a significant number of outsiders will come, a key to economic impact. He also said the events could discourage some people from visiting the Gaslamp, which would cancel out some of the economic activity generated by the game.
