The Fed has done its utmost to put the foot on the accelerator of the economy, yet political administrations firmly apply the other foot to the brakes by increasing taxes and regulations, discouraging enterprise, and leaving people with less disposable income. With both feet to the floor, we can only anticipate the big bang when the engine seizes up. Obviously better actions would release both feet. As acknowledged in former eras: You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
